History and Details
Located in the rural environment of Kirillawatta, Webada—about a mile down Webada road from the Idigahamula junction in Kirillawala on the Colombo-Kandy road—this women's elders' home sits on 1 Rood of land donated by Mrs. Madan Arachchige Ramya Seneviratne. Established on December 06, 1991, the home currently provides shelter and care for about 15 resident mothers.
Following the groundbreaking on December 06, 1990, the construction of this home was completed in a short span of one year with an estimated cost of Rs. 950,000 (a building 107 feet long and 27 feet wide). The housewarming was held on December 06, 1991, followed by an all-night Pirith chanting, an alms-giving to 25 monks the next day, and an inauguration ceremony on the 8th. Mr. M.A.P. Manthrirathne made a significant financial contribution to the construction, supported largely by the villagers of Webada.
The opening ceremony was graced by notable guests including HelpAge Chairman JP H.P. Gunaratne, National Director Leel Gunasekara, land donor Mrs. Ramya Seneviratne, and Mr. M.A.P. Manthrirathne. To facilitate financial management, a current account was opened at the People's Bank, Kiribathgoda. The home is registered under the Department of Social Services. Retired teacher Mrs. Chandra Kumari Thalpe was selected as the first matron, while Mrs. D.R. Podimenike was the first resident mother to be admitted.
